Discoveries

Well, Anyways, I've been programming and delving into Linux alot lately. I've learned some really cool commands, and things to do with my box. I spent the day trying out different window managers, and it kinda put some ideas into my head, about getting perhaps a low end computer and setting it up as some sort of server, or some lightweight help, whenever I get money or
time to afford such equipment. What I need is another computer which I can do load managing on.

Karl had changed the firmware on a simple wireless router, to make it a bridge to Ethernet, thus saving tons of money, for something that should have been much simpler. Anyways, I need my room back at my house to be wired up with Ethernet. I would prefer any permanent equipment like a desktop to be firmly hooked in.

What I would do is just put the computer somewhere hidden, link it up to the network and use my laptop to remotely connect to it. Blackbox was pretty cool. Then I learned some pretty nifty commands, like import - a terminal program that will take a screenshot, but more
configurable and powerful setup - simple Redhat setup program (terminal)

I think i fixed the problem with not being able to browse music shares on other computers with banshee. If, it was fixed properly, and it was indeed the problem, it lies within SELinux, I was blocking NFS, and I was unaware, so with that cleared up, I should be able to browse things just fine. But then again I haven't tried it just yet.

Among other things I spent some time browsing forums, learning about the community a bit, and neglecting my schoolwork (not cool). Linux is really awesome, and I'm glad to have this learning opportunity.

Havent studied much cisco lately, but thats besides the point. This is a Linux/God Journal.

anyways, I finally got yum update to work. I fixed the problem, Most likely the livna repository was conflicting with the others. so I did
yum --disablerepo=livna update
Everything After that worked fine..

I have also been messing around with some themes for gnome. I haven't used kde much, to tell you the truth. I really like gnome. but You could say that I am ready for a change. After all I'm getting too used to the layout. But I've got bigger things to work on besides themes and layouts. I think It will be awesome once I finally get some websites going on or something like that.

I figured out a cool trick with nautilus. This is accessible in many ways, but if you choose Connect to Server, gnome will auto mount any ftp server automatically, untill you unmount it yourself. It's always there! and its a part of the filesystem, thats just the coolest thing I've ever seen!

I uninstalled alot of crap from failed windows programs to work in wine. Namely Halo and command and conquer renegade. I'm looking at getting win4lin, that would be very cool, and I could play all my videogames again.

But I'm going to make a rule for myself, if I get it that is. Install nothing other than videogames and never use anything else on it. Stick to linux.

Cisco Journal (discontinued)

I decided to put my journal for cisco in here too. I guess this can be an all around computer learning center.

I learned about MANs, though I never really thought about them, they are used in special cases, like when banks want to connect all of their branches throughout a city. They could even use a parabolic antenna! I just thought that was really cool and practical. Otherwise they would have to use private lines by the service provider.

Learned about Intranets and extranets.

My Story

It was christmas eve 2004. I had heard alot about Linux from Mr. Smart in my Networking class at Alexander High. And had even gotten to use Knoppix on several occasions. I had heard all the (in theory) you can do *everything* on linux that you can on windows.

And all the cool stuff about how the desktops were completely customizable, and if you wanted to do something you could do it. What really intrigued me was that the source code was completely available, and that you could make changes and adjustments to any program of your wish and even the Kernel itself! And to top it off it was written in C!

C .... A language I was familiar with, I had used it as a huge hobby that took much of my free times of writing windows programs with the win32 api. aka And though I had very little success in writing crap for it, I did learn the structure of the language quite well.

So there I was Christmas Eve. Finally got all My iso's burned to the disks with fc3. even the srpms, didn't even know what they were for, but I had them. So anyways, it was getting close to bed time, by the time I got home from the most amazing church service. I had a blast. Pastor Dave even read us the childrens book he always read to his kids on christmas eve.

Anyways, I began the install, and finished installing just before bed time, If i remember correctly, I even took it to bed to see what all new stuff I got. Problem was I didn't create a user account, and I didn't know anything about root, so I ended up reformatting later on that day, as we opened gifts and this time making sure to create a username for myself. It wasn't untill maybe 3 days later that I learned of root from cloudyone(irc friend i have had for a long time)

But during that Christmas break, the most I got done was to get ndiswrapper working with my wireless lan, and to learn the smallest bit of information about shell scripting, and making things work on linux.

I learned the most when My friend and I installed FC2(came with Sams FC2 unleashed book) on 2 computers in Mr. Smarts Class. There I learned a small dosage about dealing with RPMS' and compiling from source tar balls. Wine was a good learning point too about how theory and reality are two different things. Almost nothing ran the way it should.

In the end, I got almost no work done in that class except for linux. Oh, and My exploration with cups was simply hillarious. Through a well known exploit throughout the school, we could view information on the tech drive (forbidden) and I found an Excel spreadsheet containing 1. Printer Type 2. IP address & 3. Room number
I had with my friends on that one. We had many ghost printer attacks to the library, at one point we even freaked out the librarian to where she started looking everywhere around the room.

I'll save why I got rid of linux on my laptop for another day.
